Seoul, Korea June 18, 2012 -- GM Korea has begun this year’s voluntary English teaching program as part of fulfilling its commitment to reach out to communities in which it is located. The company held an “English Day with GM Korea” at Incheon Cheongcheon Middle School near its main office in Bupyeong.
On the day, executives including GM Korea’s CIO Pierre Matthee and Global Light Vehicle Product Development Division head Jim Trucksis were present to celebrate the event.
Mr. Matthee said, “The main objective of our program is to give the students a lot of chances to practice spoken English so that they won’t be afraid of talking to English speakers. We will offer in the future many other English language programs to nurture globally competitive talents by taking advantage of our status as a global corporation.”
Kim Sol, one of the students who took part in today’s English program, said, “In the beginning it was a little bit awkward, but as time passed I felt comfortable and found it so fun because the teachers were nice and attentive. Now I won’t run away from a foreign visitor when she approaches me for direction.”
GM Korea has consistently carried out the program since 2004 at Cheongcheon Middle School and other schools. It has plans to expand the program to teach at more schools beginning in the latter half of this year.
In addition to the educational program, the employees of GM Korea are active in voluntary activities such as alliances with charity organizations, New Year’s Day gift giving, sharing of Kimchi and coal briquette in wintertime, invitation of underprivileged children to Christmas parties, and monetary donations to foundations.
