SK Telecom could reduce the burden on the network by using a highly advanced data compression technology. Since winning the Media Lab project in November 2011, SK Telecom has succeeded in creating the 3D film making and media platform and technical solutions to transmit 3D images on the LTE network in real time.

Seoul, Korea ¶ July 10, 2012 -- SK Telecom showcased the world’s first 3D TV broadcasting through an LTE network in its opening ceremony on July 9 for the 3D Media Lab at Sangam-dong in northwest Seoul. The 3D Media Lab project, the joint endeavor of SK Telecom and SBS Artech, was supported by both the Korea Electronics Association and the 3D Fusion Industry Association in order to nurture Korea’s 3D industry.

On the opening day, SK Telecom sent out experimental 3D signals via the LTE network by linking the 3D media equipment with the LTE network. The data size of 3D content is twice bigger than that for regular 2D programming as the signals for images seen from two eyes must be sent separately. Previously, 3D signals were difficult to send through the 3G network while on the LTE network these were much faster with fewer instances of latency.

The 3D Media Lab will from now be used to produce 3D films or lease to third-party producers. It will in the near future add 3D film production facilities for editing, recording, and viewing while building a testing lab and training center.

Ha Ho-Sung, the head of the public sector business division, said, “With our state-of-the-art LTE 2.0 operational capabilities, we could fuse two different industries. I hope the latest media lab opening could be the momentum for such industry fusion.”
