Seoul, KOREA ¶ Mar 12, 2012 (Whowired) -- Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has proven its world-class shipbuilding by winning a supply contract for the Royal Navy. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (CEO: Nam Sang-tae) said on Mar 12 that it signed a 8 billion won (450 million pounds) contract with the British Ministry of Defense to build four supply ships.

The four warships to be built are auxiliary ships for carriers, each 200 meters long and 28 meters wide.  All of them will be constructed at the Okpo shipyard, then assigned to the Royal Fleet Auxiliary in 2016 to provide Royal Navy ships with fuel, ammunition, water, foods and other supplies.

CEO Nam Sang-tae said “This contract is very meaningful in a way that we build for the Royal Navy, one of the most traditional and powerful marine forces in the world, for the first time and it speaks for itself that Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has become a world-class manufacturer not only for merchant ships but for warships in terms of period of delivery, performances and prices.
