N-Screen Service Users Shoot up as LTE Subscribers Increase

Seoul, KOREA ¶ May 09, 2012 -- As the subscriber numbers for LTE services in Korea broke the 5-million mark, more and more LTE users are signing up for the N-Screen service by which the user can view high-quality videos on a variety of devices. In tandem with the rise in LTE subscribers, those opting for the new N-Screen service have doubled this year.

N-Screen is a next-generation computing and networking service that allows the user to share visual content on different digital devices such as the smartphone, desktop PC, smart TV, tablet PC, and automobile video screen. With this service, the user who has downloaded a video can view the same video on the TV and start off where it ends on a different device such as the smartphone or tablet PC on the subway without being constrained by time, location, or platform.

On May 8, SK Planet and LG U+ revealed that they have respectively signed up as many as 2 million subscribers for just one month. The service had been around since the 3G era but had difficulty finding enough number of users due to frequent video interruptions and delays.

But the situation has changed sharply as the service providers upgraded their networks with higher bandwidths so that the users can upload, download, and stream video files at high speed. Since October last year when the companies transitioned to the 4G network, the subscriber numbers have exploded.

With the rising number of users, the data volume has increased too. According to LG U+, for example, the number of files uploaded on its N-Screen service U+ Box has surged fivefold since March when the company started a nationwide LTE service. SK Planet’s Hoppin, the similar N-Screen service, has also experienced a three-fold increase in data volume.
