Seoul, KOREA ¶ Mar 21, 2012 (Whowired) – SK Telecom said on March 19 that the MVNO services based on the company’s mobile telecom network has reached the 100,000 subscriber mark. The service had been launched in July 2011 and signed on as many as 50,000 subscribers within only six months in December. It has taken three months to add another 50,000.
An MVNO, or mobile virtual network operator, is a mobile phone operator that provides services directly to their own customers but does not own key network assets such as a licensed frequency allocation of radio spectrum and the cell tower infrastructure. Instead these assets are leased from a mobile network operator in the region where the MVNO operates.
In partnership with MVNO operators such as Eyes Vision, Korea Cable Telecom, and Unicoms, SK Telecom will engage in a promotional campaign to educate consumers about what MVNO can deliver for them. The campaign to be held from March 19 was planned after learning that many consumers were not aware about the services and were not comfortable with using services provided by untested operators.
