Seoul, KOREA ¶ Dec 20, 2011 (Whowired) -- KT Corp said Tuesday that it has formed a consortium with 13 global mobile operators including NTT Communications, Chunghwa Telecom to develop an Asian submarine cable, namely Asia Pacific Gateway(APG). The undersea fiber optic cable will connect nine Asian countries with a 10,000 kilometer link, including South Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

KT said the maximum data transfer speed of the APG is 38.4 Tbps (Tera bit per second), equivalent of downloading 7,200 movies with size of 700 Mbyte only in one second. KT plans to initiate the construction of the APG early next year and finish linking the cable to undersea and land connect points around the nine counties for next two years, and to start the commercial service in early 2014.

Kim Seung Man, Head of Network Group at KT said “We believe the Asia Pacific Gateway will provide an unmatched data transmission service guaranteeing speed and stability, and also minimizing possible damages by natural disasters.” adding ”Once completed, we believe the APC will act as a major data hub in Asia, satisfying much of growing global telecommunication demands.”
