SEOUL, Korea ¶ Nov 28, 2011 (Whowired) -- Researchers at the ‘Institute of Next Generation Telecommunications’ at LG Electronics received a surprise thanks letter recently. The sender was Mr Koo Bon-joon, Vice Chairman of LG Electronics. On last Friday, the Vice Chairman delivered his thanks letter through Mr Ahn Seung Kwon, CTO(Chief Technology Officer) to one hundred researchers in LTE standardization and patent departments at the institute. Plus, he didn’t forget to give his CEO pizzas to the pleasantly surprised employees.
LG Electronics prepared this event to cheer the strategic LTE brainpower at the company who developed the world-first LTE device modem chip in 2008, and has made LG to be the largest patent holder in LTE related technologies. In the letter with his hand-written signature, Vice Chairman Koo wrote that “I would like to deliver my sincere appreciation to all the researchers of the institute who make LG Electronics world number one LTE patent holder. I believe all your efforts will be a strong foundation for the bright future of our company.”
Foreseeing that LTE would be the major force in 4G market, LG Electronics has made special efforts in developing LTE technologies since 2005. And it is being paid off now. According to a data by Jefferies & Co, LG Electronics holds 23% of 1,400 core LTE related patents, worth of 7.9 billion dollars in economic values. And the company’s efforts are also returned with Optimus LTE Smartphone which has just passed 200,000 sales only in 50 days after its release.
